Who is Caps For
Kids?
Caps For Kids is an international, nonprofit
organization dedicated to providing autographed hats and scarves to
children with cancer who have lost their hair as a result of various
forms of treatment.
How did the organization get started?
Caps For Kids was founded in 1993 Stephen Heinrich,
MS, MD. Dr. Heinrich was treating a young man with cancer. Lee was an
avid Auburn University fan, and Dr. Heinrich gave him a hat
autographed by Auburn University football coach Terry Bowden and his
father, Florida State University football coach, Bobby Bowden. When
Dr. Heinrich realized how happy a simple hat could make someone
suffering from a life-threatening disease, he organized Caps For Kids
to improve the spirits of young cancer patients nationwide.
How does Caps For Kids work?
Caps For Kids ships autographed hats to each
participating hospital center. At each hospital, the hats are
displayed in a glass case and after induction chemotherapy begins,
children are given the opportunity to choose a hat from the selection.
If the child would like a different hat, the request is circulated
among the Caps For Kids volunteers located around the country and
every effort is made to secure the perfect hat.
Where is Caps For Kids located?
The organization is based at Children's Hospital in
New Orleans. Affiliates exist at more than 90 hospitals throughout the
United States including 4 chapters in Canada.
Who runs Caps For Kids?
The organization is currently run by one fulltime
staff member, one part time employee and several volunteers, all of
whom have other full-time jobs. A Board of Directors and an advisory
group help to drive the organizations growth.
How does Caps For Kids acquire hats?
Until this point, Caps For Kids has relied solely on
donations of hats from individuals, hat manufacturers and sports
teams. The Caps For Kids volunteers will continue to seek autographs
and deliver the requested hats to children around the country.
How does Caps For Kids seek signatures?
Caps For Kids volunteers secure autographs from
athletes, entertainers, and other celebrities. They continually seek
ways to reach people for autographs.
